FAQs on Korean Age Calculator

As per the Korean age system,

1. A person’s age includes the prenatal period (when a baby is in its mother’s womb) of one year into the age.

2. The age changes on the 01st January of every year.

For example, If a person is born on 31.12.2000, on the same day, the age will be counted as 1 year old. On the next day, i.e. on 01.01.2001, the person will be two years old. Even though the person is actually two day old, the age in Korean system consider two years.

If you try to find out the Korean age manually, there are higher chances that you will get confused. So, better check an online Korean Age Calculator to calculate your Korean age quickly. Bookmark this calculator for your future references.

You can convert your normal/chronological / International age into Korean age using the following formula :

  1. If your birthday has passed, then: Korean age = Normal age + 1
  2. If your birthday has not passed, then: Korean age = Normal age + 2

In the Korean age calculator tool, you need not input the exact date of birth. Only the year of birth is enough for the Korean age system calculator to calculate your Korean age.

Input your birth year into the Korean Age Calculator ( input box below “Enter Year Of Birth” label) and click the “Calculate Korean Age” button.

The calculator will use the below formula for calculation –

Korean Age = (Current Year – Year of Birth) + 1.

There are two differences between an International Age Calculator and a Korean Age Calculator:

  1. In the International age system, age is calculated from the date of birth. However, in the Korean age system, age is calculated from the 1st of January of the year of birth. On every 1st of January, a person becomes one year older. (Refer to our Age Calculator to calculate the international age.)
  2. In the Korean age system, a person’s age is considered the prenatal period of one year. i.e. at the time of birth, a person is already considered as one year old.

e.g. as per the international age system, a person born on 31.12.2023 will be only one day old as of 01.01.2024. However, as per the Korean age system, the person will be two years old. Because a) on 31.12.2023, the person is already one year old. b) when the year changed to the 1st of January, the age increased by one more year.

It’s Not Possible. Since the Korean age doesn’t consider month and date of birth, it’s difficult to convert into the International age with months and days.

Yes. The legal age limits like driving, drinking, smoking, and international documents like passports, birth certificates, etc. are based on International age.

Omnicalculator.com: Pros – The calculator is good. Cons: There is too much text on the web page. The user feels lost in the jungle of words. Lifespectrum360.com: Pros – The calculator is good. Its UI is simple and structured. You can find the required information on the UI. There is a provision to enter your feedback as well.

If Koreans want to know your age, they will ask one of the following questions depending on the type of relationships you have. They all mean ‘How old are you’?

  • Known people, Informal: meot sariya?
  • Polite, To elders : naiga eotteoke doeyo?
  • Stranger, Formal : yeonsega eotteoke doeseyo?

Koreans celebrate their birthdays on actual birthdays as per the international calendar, not on 01st January.

Traditional Koreans prefer to celebrate with friends and family members in traditional ways with dishes like seaweed soup, and Modern Koreans celebrate their birthdays mostly with Cakes. Music, Dance and Group activities are also becoming part of birthday celebrations.

The politeness of addressing a person in Korea depends on the age, unlike in the International system, where the word “You” will address juniors, same age, and seniors alike. In Korea, If someone is older, you call them “noona“. If younger, then “dongsaeng” and if same age, then “donggap“.

In the popular Korean film “Donggapnaegi Gwawehagi,” which translates to “private tutoring someone the same age,” the heroine, a freshman in college, begins tutoring the hero, a senior in high school who was born in the same year as her. Because she is his teacher and they are (“donggap“), their situation becomes complicated.
